World Chase Tag - the new 'catch' in the world of sports?

World Chase Tag - the next big thing or the most bizarre sport ever?

Introduction
World Chase Tag (WCT) brings a twist to the classic playground game - tag, mixing it with the high-energy you can find in other sports, like parkour. In WCT, players will chase around an obstacle-filled arena, where they dodge, jump, and sprint to evade or tag their opponent within a 20-second round.

Though originating as a smaller scale event, World Chase Tag has quickly captured global attention, with events now streamed on major sports channels and a rapidly growing fan base. Its unique mix of athleticism and suspense has made it a standout in the sports world.

The Intensity of World Chase Tag

While WCT is thrilling to watch, its intensity and physical demands bring certain challenges. The sport requires agility, speed, and parkour skills, making it a demanding activity for even experienced athletes. That makes World Chase Tag a difficult sport for casual players, who are likely to jump into it without extensive training in movement techniques.

Additionally, the arena’s custom obstacles add more challenges. Setting up a proper WCT arena can be costly and speciously limited, making the sport’s accessibility for local communities or schools less available. Without an even simple setup, it’s hard to replicate the professional-level excitement of WCT.

Is WCT integration to the General Public

We know what you're thinking, "WCT sounds maybe a bit aggressive, does this sport have potential to become globally popular? Well, accessibility remains a primary concern for WCT’s growth. While the obstacles and parkour skills create a rather odd experience for fans, they can be intimidating for people who are unfamiliar, people who may lack access to training facilities or parkour experience. To achieve mainstream success, organisations behind World Chase Tag might consider creating more beginner-friendly formats with easier obstacles and techniques to allow a bigger audience to participate.

Despite these challenges, WCT offers something truly different, both in its game experience and its reach to audiences who enjoy high-stakes and rapid action. The adrenaline-packed rounds and parkour-ish chases make it very engaging to watch, and this entertainment factor could be the key to WCT’s expansion.

If you'd like to learn more about the sport, make sure to check out the official YouTube channel of WCT: WCT YouTube Channel

Will the world accept WCT in open arms? Or will it remain just an ambition in some dreamers' minds? What is your opinion? What do you think of the sport as a whole? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Underwater Rugby: A Hidden Sport

Introduction

Underwater Rugby (UWR) takes traditional rugby to new depths, literally. It is played in a pool, with two teams that work to place a weighted ball in the opposing team’s basket at the pool’s bottom. It was invented in Germany around the 1960s, and it's characterized by the requirement of exceptional breath control, strength, and swimming agility, where players use diving masks, snorkels, and fins. While UWR has seen growth internationally, especially in Europe and parts of Asia, it remains a niche sport.

So what could be the biggest challenge? The difficulty to watch it for its unique underwater environment.

What Makes Underwater Rugby Unique

Underwater Rugby (UWR) is a unique, high-intensity sport which combines rugby with the demands of diving. Players dart forward, dodge, and score, and all while holding their breath. This makes UWR physically very challenging and incredibly dynamic as well, making it interesting to athletes who look for something beyond traditional sports.

However, with much of the action happening underwater, it’s hard for spectators to fully understand or even see the game itself. Traditional broadcasting can’t capture the 3D play, which would be key in order to improve its exposure, which limits its reach to diverse clubs and keeping it relatively niche.

The Challenge: Bringing Underwater Rugby to the Surface

To grow beyond this exact point where UWR stands, the sport needs greater visibility. Experimental broadcasts using underwater cameras have risen interest, but the type of equipment needed and the deep pools are very costly and often not available. Access to this kind of setup is a significant barrier, as many potential players don't have the facilities where they could be practicing or even compete. Overcoming these barriers could open UWR to a bigger audience, attracting new fans and players to this unique sport of rugby and diving.

The Future of Underwater Rugby

Despite the obstacles, there is potential for UWR to reach new audiences by different advancements in underwater broadcasting, which could bring the game to life for spectators and open doors to bigger and international tournaments. Can UWR scale up its visibility and accessibility to become more than a niche sport? Could Underwater Rugby’s unique format appeal to a larger audience if it had better visibility? Or is it destined to stay in the same position because of the logistical problems? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Ballon D'or awards of 2024, Spanish dominance! 🇪🇸

Ballon D'or awards of 2024, Spanish dominance! 🇪🇸

The France Football awards were last night (Monday, Oct 28th), and the surprise is a big one!

The France Football awards is the most prestige award ceremony in the world of not only football, but sport itself. You could say these are the Oscars of football. In fact, this was said, by none other than Hollywood legend, Natalie Portman, who attended the ceremony yesterday, and was the one to award the Women's Ballon D'or trophy, to Spain's and Barça superstar, Aitana Bonmatí.

Picture posted last night to x.com from the official account of the Ballon D'or; Portman on the left, Bonmatí on the right

Spain swept the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony, making history by taking home the top awards across most categories. Rodri, Manchester City’s midfield maestro, claimed his first Ballon d’Or, winning by the skin of his teeth Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior, who many saw as a favourite due to his season of incredible performances. This ranking stirred up some debate, especially considering Vinícius’s role in lifting Real Madrid to title contention.

In the Ballon d’Or Féminin category, Aitana Bonmatí won her second title, ensuring her place as one of the top players in women’s football history and a key figure for FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team. Her award symbolises the rising power and global recognition of women’s football, adding to the event’s importance as it showcased top-tier female athletes on a par with their male counterparts.

The Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best under-21 player, went to Spain’s Lamine Yamal, the young Barça forward who has captivated audiences with his skill and maturity on the field. He makes the 3rd Spanish player to win an individual award for 2024.

The Sócrates Award, honoring contributions to social justice, was awarded to Jenni Hermoso for her efforts in raising awareness about sexual abuse, especially in light of the controversy surrounding the unwanted kiss incident with former Spanish Federation President Luis Rubiales. Her truly deserved trophy saw the 4th Spanish player to win an individual award last night.

The Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper went to Argentina’s Emiliano Martínez, who won it for the second time in a row after a more than impressive season with Aston Villa. The Argentinean, who's won it back in 2023 due to his amazing performance in the Men's World Cup in Qatar, has kept his great form throughout 2024, including winning the Copa America with the national team, and a historic season for Aston Villa, finishing top 4 of the premier league and securing Champions League football.

As sports evolve, the Ballon d’Or remains the golden standard. But as we celebrate football, it begs the question: will any other sport or league develop awards with a comparable level of prestige? Given the rise of sports like women’s football, which has gained its own Ballon d’Or category, could we see similar accolades emerge in other sports, honouring talent and cultural impact on a larger scale? The 2024 ceremony serves as a reminder that recognition on this level can not only honour excellence but also inspire entire sports to grow.

The world will be watching next year to see if this expansion and equality in sports continues – maybe one day, we’ll even see new “Oscars” of sport emerge, raising the bar across the world.

Bossaball: The Ultimate Hybrid Sport or Too Complex to Catch On?

Introduction

Bossaball combines volleyball, soccer, gymnastics and capoeira on an inflatable court with trampolines, ensuring the fans a great experience. It's originated in Spain, and gained popularity in countries like Brazil, Singapore, the Netherlands... mainly due to the acrobatic performances, the music and the exciting environment created.

Managing the complexity of Bossaball

Not everything about this sport can be perfect, it also has challenges. The sport is complex, requiring players to be very well prepared for the volleyball and soccer techniques while jumping on trampolines... here is a video demonstrating what the sport looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f-58WU6FfQ

The difficulty of the sport could limit the appeal of different demographics since they are not able to practice it properly.  Additionally, the inflatable courts are costly and require a lot of space, making casual play very difficult.

Is Bossaball Too Complex for the Masses?

The accessibility is the main concern for the organizations that want to scale it into a global phenomenon. But as we mentioned before, the need for expensive equipment and unique setup could restrict the growth of Bossaball.

Despite the challenges, this sport offers a unique experience to the audience that spectates the games, and that can be the key to scale the sport into a next level, the entertainment factor. With that into consideration, we should also keep in mind that the fans may demand the sport to simplify its equipment requirements or develop beginner-friendly versions to lower the entry barrier, so more people can enjoy it and scale bossaball at a global level.

Is Bossaball too complex for the general public, or could its uniqueness drive its growth? How can it overcome the challenges involved with equipment and facilities? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Sepak Takraw: The Spectacular Sport with an Identity Problem

Sepak Takraw: The Spectacular Sport with an Identity Problem

Introduction

Sepak Takraw is a dynamic game which combines elements of different sports; Volleyball, football, and martial arts. It was created in Southeast Asia, and it consists to send a rattan ball over the net by using knees, chest, feet and head. It's popularity depends mostly in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Despite the acrobatic movements, flips and kicks of the ball, Sepak Takraw is struggling to gain popularity outside the countries mentioned before.

The question we can ask ourselves is: How can this fascinating sport grow beyond Southeast Asia?

Sepak Takraw's culture

Sepak Takraw has deep roots in countries around the Southeast of Asia, as we mentioned before. This has both advantages and disadvantages. From one perspective, the sport has already a strong relationship with a specific number of countries, and that keep it's popularity alive. The problem is, it almost seems that Sepak Takraw is seen as a regional speciality rather than a global sport, something surprising considering that mixes three of the most popular sports in the world: Football, volleyball and martial arts.

Can Sepak Takraw Adapt Without Losing Its Identity?

The sport faces a challenge, and in order to grow internationally, some critics are proposing the idea of changing the rules or format to make it more accessible and open to everyone. This change could affect very negatively the already existing tradition and culture that relies on the game, specially for Southeast Asian fans. Finding the right balance might be the key to open the doors for Sepak Takraw while keeping the cultural integrity.

The Future of Sepak Takraw

Sepak Takraw might have more chances to enter new markets as a result of globalization. When played properly, this game's unusual quickness and spectacle attract to fans all over the world. However, the main challenge is how this game may move toward modernity without losing its cultural roots.

Is modernization necessary for Sepak Takraw to grow, or is it possible to gain recognition without sacrificing its traditions? Tell us in the comments below!

Teqball – The Fusion of Football and Table Tennis

Teqball – The Fusion of Football and Table Tennis

Introduction

In the world of sports, new formats are capturing the attention of fans and athletes. One of the most original ones is Teqball, a mix between football and table tennis. It's generally played on a curved table, and is gaining popularity around the world, even for competition level.

Background

Teqball was invented in Hungary around 2012, by Gábor Borsányi, György Gattyán, and Viktor Huszár. Together, they tried to create a different way for football players to use their skills in a different way, where they can use any part of their body, besides their hands (just like football), and hit the ball over the net while landing it to the opponents side of the table. This game became viral in many social media platforms, and this resulted on the creation of the FITEQ (2017), an international federation that regulates and manages the sport at a professional level. The sport has grown substantially, with endorsements, celebrities (such as Neymar Jr.) tournaments and interest from fans all over the world.

Analysis: Managing Teqball's Growth

There is no doubt that the sport is gaining more fame over the years, and it's been well managed for the rapid growth that has experienced over the years. The help of the different Teqball national federations, the competitions and the process of standardizing the sport has been crucial for its growth.

However, the main challenge is finding the right balance between the amateur appeal of Teqball, with the expansion of the sport from a business perspective. Some critics argue that the over commercialization, specially if it's too soon, could affect negatively the organic/natural growth.

From a player's perspective, Teqball provides an interesting way to improve football skills while having fun at the same time. Some players have commented that it could remain as a niche sport, specially due to its difficulty and high-skill requirement. From the fan or spectator perspective, the fast pace, dynamism, and entertainment, Teqball offers great value. On the other hand, for the organizers, it's considered a low-cost sport and most importantly, scalable. It only requires Teqball tables, which can be set up in small spaces, and a football.

The main issue, once again, its regarding about whether Teqball should develop into a completely professional or competitive sport or stay as a recreational game. What are your thoughts about it?

Future perspective:

Looking ahead, the possible inclusions of Teqball in the Asian Beach Games and World Urban Games may mean that this sport is well-placed to become a global sport competition. There are suggestions to include it as an Olympic sport in the years to come, which would give it an even greater boost.

What do you think? Will Teqball ever rival other popular sports such as table tennis? Is its current growth sustainable, or could it slowly disappear like other trendy sports? We'll be happy to hear your thoughts in the comments!
